It is our jobs as parents to provide a happy and nurturing environment for our children. However sometimes we run around like lunatics with our hair on fire shuttling our kids to their activities in between work, feeding the dogs, picking up the dry cleaning… As 2015 rolls around what really is important? What can we do to point our kids in the right direction? As a matter of fact, what can we do to get ourselves heading down the right path?
Rather than setting up a long list of goals which never seem to work by the way, what about choosing simplified, one word or short phrases to live? This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have lofty goals but rather focusing on a word that has meaning behind it.
For example, one of my sons wants to be an actor, the youngest NFL football player, go to space and then become president. I’m sure you are thinking by now his goals are out of reach or maybe a little crazy. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if he reaches all of his dreams. He has already achieved one of his goals (I’ll let you figure which one by yourself). For him what I call chunk it down will help him find meaningful words that represent his vision such as Educate, Drive, Practice that can lead him everyday to go in the right direction.
Chris Brogan, a New York Times best seller is famous for picking 3 words since 2006. He believes that words “will bolster you and give you direction that goes beyond the goals you might attach as a result of these words”.
So what do you have to lose? Make 2015 a year of experiments for your family…Remember nothing ventured is nothing gained. My words for 2015 are:
Do it (Ok I know it is more than 1 word but it comes from my favorite Nike phrase…Just Do It.)
Much happiness in 2015 to all!
